How to use A.I. in your job search?
There’s so many A.I. tools out there nowadays, that it’s hard to know which ones actually make a difference in your job search.
To keep it simple, I’m going to discuss ChatGPT and how I use this to help my clients in their job search.
If you don’t have an account yet, you can make this for free at OpenAI.com.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an advanced AI language model developed by OpenAI. It can help with a variety of tasks – including writing resumes, crafting cover letters and preparing for job interviews.
You can see ChatGPT like your virtual assistant that you can ask anything. However, the quality of the answers depends on the input you give to the A.I. model. This is called prompts.
How to use A.I. in your job search:
Let’s have a look at the different ways A.I., in this case the model of ChatGPT, can help you in your job search:
1. Optimize your resume
Upload your resume to ChatGPT and ask how you can improve it. You get the best results when you also upload a job posting you want to apply for. Often people forget to include results on their resume or the writing of the sentences can be improved. These are things that ChatGPT can easily do for you.
How ChatGPT helps:
- Improves sentence structure and clarity
- Ensures key skills and achievements stand out
- Optimizes your resume for specific job descriptions
💡 Try this prompt:
“I’m applying for this job [insert job posting link]. Here’s my resume. How can I improve it to match this job better?”
2. Make the perfect cover letter
Did you know that often a cover letter isn’t even read at all! However, I would always include one to show your interest and motivation. Don’t spend hours over optimizing your cover letter. ChatGPT can save you a lot of time and you’ll be surprised how good it turns out!
How ChatGPT helps:
- Writes personalized cover letters based on the job description
- Ensures professional and engaging language
- Saves time and effort
💡 Try this prompt:
“Write a cover letter for a [job title] position at [company]. [Insert job posting link]. Here’s my resume. Highlight my experience in [field] and my key achievements.”
3. Prepare for job interviews
You have an interview coming up! That’s great news, but now comes the preparation. I believe interviewing is really a skill you can learn. Always listen carefully to the interviewer and what he or she is looking to hear. Next to that, there’s always general questions you can expect next to specific questions about the role.
How ChatGPT helps:
- Generates common and technical interview questions
- Provides strong sample answers
- Helps you structure your responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
💡 Try this prompt:
“I have an interview for a [job title] position at [company]. [Insert job posting link]. Can you generate a list of common and role-specific job interview questions, along with strong sample answers?”
4. Find new job opportunities
Many job seekers only use large job boards like LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor. However there are many hidden opportunities on company websites, niche job boards and other platforms.
How ChatGPT helps:
- Finds niche job boards related to your industry
- Suggests networking strategies to connect with hiring managers
- Helps craft messages for reaching out to recruiters
💡 Try this prompt:
“Give me a list of niche job boards and websites where I can find jobs in [industry] in the Netherlands.”
Your personal career assistant
You can use ChatGP as your personal career assistant, however you’re always the one having the final say! Make sure to always check the results and make personal adjustments. Recruiters can tell when something is too ChatGPT optimized 🙂
