Inhouse Days in The Netherlands:
An inhouse day gives you the opportunity to get to know a company. You can learn a lot about the company in one day. Expect presentations, a tour of the office, a business case, or a more informal setting such as a lunch. Inhouse days are often focussed on students or recent graduates.
Get to know the employees and the recruiters of the organization and ask your questions. An inhouse day is a great way to expand your network and get noticed by recruiters.
There are often many applications for an in-house day and a selection procedure can take place. Make sure your resume is updated and you write a good cover letter in order to participate.
How to Prepare for Career Events?
Attending career events takes time and effort. You have to travel there and you will spend several hours at the event. So you better make the most out of it!
Here’s my advice, as a recruiter, how to best prepare for career events:
1. Know which companies you’d like to speak with
There will be multiple companies present at a career event. You might prefer some companies over others. And not all companies will match your studies and professional experience.
Go to the website of the career event and know which companies are there that you’d like to connect with.
2. Know which roles you’re interested in
Next, you will go to the careers page of these companies. Here you will check which vacancies are open.
Knowing this will make the conversations with the recruiters at the event a lot more easier. Now you can speak directly how your experience matches the roles they’re hiring for. In the end, that’s what recruiters are there to do!
3. Be prepared
It doesn’t stop here. You want to have your elevator pitch ready. Who are you? What are you looking for? What value do you bring? Be prepared to introduce yourself in in 1-2 minutes.
You also want to bring your resume. Some career fairs have the option to upload your resume digitally already. Doing this will allows you to connect with companies prior and after the event.
Are Career Events Worth it?
In my opinion, yes!
We live in a world where everything becomes more digital and where resumes are being preselected by A.I. tools, yet nothing beats human connection!
Attending career events and your effort to get to know a specific company and the people behind the company goes a long way!
Also the chances of being hired by being referred into a company and through word of mouth are just way higher than simply applying online.
You have the chance to directly interact with recruiters and the people working at the company you want to work for.
Many career events even have the option for onsite interviews or special networking and selection events after the event.
